Once I stopped breaking the rules, the rules started breaking me.

This week’s ups and downs

Well I guess the news first. I got my physics exam today. Seems like I’m not dropping the class just yet. I got a 95 out of a 100. I’m a little annoyed because it really should’ve been a 96 as that one point was taken off for something I did that was immensely stupid.

I was the 2nd one finished with the test (there were about 150 people in the lecture hall), and I’m kicking myself for not going over the test before I turned it in. Taking my time would have likely won me those last 4 points. But I’ll take this and appreciate that I’ve got room for improvement. :)

That was the “up”. The “down” came, surprisingly enough, in my digital design class. Last week I went to class, sat down, and prepared for two hours of high-bandwidth data transfer into my noodle. When the professor walked in much of the class got up to hand in that weeks homework. I on the other hand simply thought to myself, “There was homework due today?” :| I then spent the first hour of lecture frantically doing the homework assignment.

Yesterday the homeworks were returned to us. I got a 60, out of a 100. :( Now here’s the worst part of it. Only one question was actually wrong, only 4 points. The rest of the 36 points were stupid, stupid mistakes because I rushed. An extra bit here, double negation there, and an entire question (20 points) answered in binary when the question clearly asked for a final answer in decimal. Stupid.

I spent the previous week living and breathing out my physics book. My panic-induced studying paid off, however it cost me more than I expected. What really bothers me is that there was no reason not to have done my homework. The digital design class was supposed to be my 4.0 class. This isn’t a problem of of not understanding the material. This is exactly what I talked about two days ago. Perfect of example of me being a shitty student.

I won’t kill myself over it this time. This is supposed to be a learning experience; well I’m learning. Better organization, better studying habits, better time management. And slowly: better Kane. :D

The homework is just a small downer. The physics exam is a big, big upper. :D Physics is only going to get tougher, but it definitely helps to have survived the first hurdle. Happy day.

You know what else? I grabbed some Chinese food for dinner tonight. No joke, here’s my fortune:

Your labors will bear sweet fruit

Even the grand oracle is cheering me on. :) Nice.

Since I didn’t bomb physics I should reward myself, don’t you think? Hmm… maybe on Sunday I’ll… ;)

Wasted Friday

Grrr! Today has not gone as planned. Let’s compare:

The plan

  1. Wake up around 8:00-ish
  2. Make breakfast
  3. Start laundry
  4. Go online and catch up on my calculus for 1-2 hours
  5. Take a break, read email, etc.
  6. Get out physics book and re-read chapter 2 with my newly-gained understanding of calculus.
  7. Tend to laundry
  8. Get lunch.
  9. Go do something remotely active, most likely go for a walk.
  10. Get back to the books and do the chapter 2 problems.
  11. If time to spare start reading chapter 3.
  12. Finish laundry
  13. Eat dinner while writing blog about my first week of school.
  14. Play game or watch movie.
  15. End the day satisfied.

The actual day

  1. Wake up around 10:00. Consider enabling alarm on Fridays too.
  2. Make breakfast
  3. Sort and start laundry (I never sort laundry, but there was a lot this morning)
  4. Go to computer and find that last night my router’s life ceased to be.
  5. Spend 30-45 minutes resetting, unplugging, and otherwise tinkering with computers, router, and modem before accepting the above.
  6. Sigh
  7. Take beloved netbook to community room to use the wi-fi.
  8. Spend an hour+ looking at router prices, specs, and compatability with either dd-wrt and/or tomato.
  9. Take a quick walk to office depot to buy a linksys WRT54G2.
  10. Shamelessly spend an hour at OD looking at pens, staplers, mechanical pencils, pens again, post-it note flags and erasers.
  11. Stop by the Nike store to check out a specific shoe (more details forthcoming in a future entry).
  12. Head home.
  13. Read instructions for updating firmware to dd-wrt.
  14. Open package, find out that WRT54G2 is version 1.5. (No one mentioned other versions of this guy online)
  15. Learn that v1.5 is not compatible with dd-wrt.
  16. Curse
  17. Sigh
  18. Go back online.
  19. Decide on WRT54GL.
  20. Stock check at OD finds that they don’t carry it. Wonderful.
  21. Get in car.
  22. Drive to OD. Return router.
  23. Get meatball sandwich from Subway.
  24. Drive down to Fry’s Electronics about 30 minutes away.
  25. Drop a little sauce on my shirt.
  26. Get to Fry’s, and help a guy jump his car.
  27. Go inside and play Stree Figher IV until I get to leader. Get my ass handed to me by leader (on “easy”). Mutter bitterly and walk away.
  28. Find WRT54GL router, pay, head back home.
  29. Get home some time shy of 7:00
  30. Spend the next hour cycling between laundry, upgrading router firmware, and making tomato soup.
  31. 8:00 – Get online with new router and write this. Soup is still cooking.

Now as a sneek preview to my not-yet-written post about the first week of school, I’ll tell you this: I need to be studying. Seriously. I need to be doing it now, not next week or the week after.

Yet here I am with Friday gone fully geriatric and I still don’t remember how to integrate a damn thing. :| Soup is almost done and I could still get 3 solid hours of education in today, but honestly I think I want to just kick back and watch a movie.

24 hours and $60 wasted. Tomorrow’s gonna have to go a little smoother.

I’ve gotta say though. Really in the grand scheme of things, so what, a damn router died. No Saturday-morning cartoons and I’ll be caught up in no time. ;)
